A look back at the events:

On April 21, 1997, Jacques Chirac, President of the French Republic, dissolved the National Assembly, arguing that France needs "now" a "new impetus", even though he has a comfortable majority there.

The left is launching the campaign around the new concept of "plural left", bringing together Socialist Party, French Communist Party, left radicals, Greens and Citizens' Movement. In the second round held in June, she obtained a majority of 319 seats, while most polls predicted a victory for the presidential camp.

This success of the left paves the way for the longest cohabitation of the Fifth Republic between Jacques Chirac and Lionel Jospin, appointed Prime Minister.
