Bayeux, symbol of the return of state authority
Bayeux was one of the objectives of the British who landed on the morning of June 6, 1944 on Gold Beach. On June 7, the 2nd Essex suffered some skirmishes with the enemy upon entering the town, however Bayeux was quickly liberated.
On June 14, General de Gaulle landed at Courseulles-sur-Mer and went to Bayeux where he gave a speech announcing the return of republican sovereignty and the establishment of the 1944 Provisional Government of the French Republic (GPRF).
