OPERATION TURQUOISE 1994 - French military and humanitarian mission in Rwanda

On June 23, 1994, President François MITTERRAND announced the immediate deployment of the MILITARY AND HUMANITARIAN MISSION "TURQUOISE", led in Zaire and Rwanda by 2,500 men of the French Army, to come to the aid of the populations decimated by an ethnic war opposing the Tutsis to the Hutus. This military operation organized by France was authorized by Resolution 929 of June 22, 1994 of the UN Security Council during the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda. Its mission is to "put an end to the massacres wherever possible, possibly by using force".

A crew of the "Flotilla 22 F" from the Nimes-Garons Naval Air Base (France) is participating in the French humanitarian deployment for Rwanda. ATL1 operates from Goma, with Kisangani airport in Zaire as its advanced base.

A philatelic mail, issued in a limited edition, was produced for this occasion.
