The Ukrainian people to receive the 2022 Sakharov Prize

The brave Ukrainian people will be awarded the European Parliament’s 2022 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in a ceremony on Wednesday 14th December at noon.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to address the plenary chamber remotely, with other representatives of the Ukrainian people gathered physically in Strasbourg.

President Roberta Metsola and several of the Ukrainian representatives will hold a press conference after the award ceremony.

Background information

The "Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought", named in honour of Soviet physicist and political dissident Andrei Sakharov, is awarded each year by the European Parliament. It was established in 1988 to honour individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms.

A philatelic envelope, designed by Historiaphil© (Philately Kiosk of the European Parliament, Strasbourg, France) commemorate the Sakharov Prize 2022. It was produced as a continuation of the collection of philatelic envelopes bearing witness since 1949 to the history of Europe and its institutions. Its edition is limited to 500 numbered copies.
