Visit of John Paul II to Eastern France (8-11 October 1988): the Pope's European dream

On the last day of his visit to the European Institutions, Pope John Paul II defined, in a speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the Church's options for the new Europe: supranationality, openness to Eastern countries and support for the Third World.
At the end of his apostolic journey to the headquarters of the European Institutions established in the Alsatian capital as well as to the three dioceses of Strasbourg, Metz and Nancy, the Pope went by helicopter to Mulhouse-Basel international airport for a Farewell Ceremony.

A philatelic envelope, designed by Historiaphil© (Philately Kiosk of the European Parliament, Strasbourg, France) commemorates the highlights of the Strasbourg plenary session of the European Parliament. It was produced as a continuation of the collection of philatelic envelopes bearing witness since 1949 to the history of Europe and its institutions. This edition is limited and numbered.
