June 16, 2022: European Presidents Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz, Mario Draghi and Klaus Iohannis travel to Kyiv for a “support visit” to Ukraine
The French President, the German Chancellor and the President of the Italian Council of Ministers left southern Poland by train, heading for kyiv to visit Volodymyr Zelenskyy. An unprecedented trip by the three leaders since the start of the Russian invasion in February, intended to express the support of their countries, European founding powers of the EU. They were then joined by Romanian head of state Klaus Iohannis to meet the Ukrainian president.
President Macron has affirmed his support for Ukraine's "immediate candidate status" for EU membership. New deliveries of heavy weapons have been confirmed.
Breaking news - June 23, 2022: the European Council of the 27 Heads of State of the EU, meeting in Brussels under the French presidency, grants Ukraine and Moldova the official status of "candidate for the European Union".
